NAWABSHAH: At least 24 persons including 18 schoolchildren and three teachers were killed and several others injured in a collision between a school van and dumper near Rohri Link Canal on Qazi Ahmed road in Nawabshah on Wednesday.
Condition of several injured children is critical. The relatives and common people reached the hospital after hearing about the tragic incident. There was a hue and cry in the hospital on the occasion.
The van collided with the loaded dump-truck 20 kilometers away from Nawabshah.
The children, who were students of a private school, Bright Future School, from the nearby town of Daulatpur, had come to Nawabshah for taking part in quiz programme. The accident occurred when the children were going back to their native town.
Due to the collision between the two vehicles, 21 students and three teachers were killed on the spot whereas 11 others sustained injuries.
The injured persons were shifted to People’s Medical College Nawabshah for medical treatment. The condition of four students is critical. Nearly 30 students and teachers were present in school van.
Police reached the site of accident and started investigation. Reports said that the injured also included three female teachers.
According to police, the school bus collided with a passenger car while taking a turn on Qazi Ahmed Link Road, killing 24 including 21 children along with teachers, chowkidar and driver of the van. The incident occurred due to overspending, the police added.
The dead and the injured were shifted to Peoples Medical College Hospital in Nawabshah while an investigation was underway.
Meanwhile, emergency was declared in all hospitals of the district.
While talking to a private TV channel, Senior provincial Minister Nisar Ahmed Khoro said that the strict legal action would be initiated against the driver and owners of the dumper.
Following the news on TV channels, frantic parents rushed to the hospital to get information about their children. Deputy Commissioner Nawabshah while talking to a private TV channel said that the students of Daulatpur School were returning to native town after taking part in the quiz program when the school van met with a tragic incident near Rohri Link Canal on Qazi Ahmed Road.
He said 20 students, teachers and guard of the school are included in the killed persons. He said that the orders of the dumber driver have been issued.
Talking to a private TV channel Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Enam Memon said all medical facilities will be provided to the injured, adding that the injured will be shifted to Hyderabad if needed.
President Mamnoon Hussain‚ Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif, Sindh Governor Dr. Ishrat ul Ibad Khan and Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah expressed shock over the loss of precious lives in the accident. In his condolence message‚ the President expressed his heartfelt sympathies with the bereaved families and prayed to Allah Almighty to grant courage to them.
The President also called upon the concerned to provide best medical assistance to the injured.
MQM chief Altaf Hussain also expressed his grief over the incident. Governor Sindh has summoned report of the incident from IG Sindh Shahid Nadeem Baloch.
