Speaking to the media here on Saturday, ECP member Riaz Kayani said that no decision had been made so far; adding that a caretaker prime minister would be appointed by 1:00 pm on Sunday (Today).
Riaz Kayani further said that the meeting had been adjourned due to the ill health of Chief Election Commissioner Fakhruddin G Ibrahim and the non attendance of Sindh ECP member Roshan Ehsani.
The ECP is tasked with appointing a caretaker prime minister in two days from a list of candidates provided by the government and opposition.
The ECP will now reconvene again on Sunday (Today) to finalize a name for the caretaker premier.
Justice Riaz Kayani also said that the ECP reviewed proposed candidates for the interim prime minister slot. The decision could not be taken in the first round due to the absence of the Sindh election commissioner.
The meeting was headed by Chief Election Commissioner Fakhruddin G Ibrahim .The commission, under the constitutional provisions, had 48 hours to agree on a candidate after the eight-member parliamentary committee failed to reach a consensus despite holding three meetings on consecutive days.
The ECP has to choose from the four nominees put forward by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League–Nawaz (PML-N).
The PPP had proposed the names of Dr Ishrat Hussain and Justice (retd) Mir Hazar Khan Khoso. PML-N’s nominees are Justice (retd) Nasir Aslam Zahid and Rasool Bux Paliejo.
Earlier, Secretary ECP Ishtiaq Ahmed told the media that the decision over the appointment of caretaker prime minister of the country will be taken by tonight after the meeting resumes or by tomorrow (Sunday) “at any cost”.
He said that election commission is not under any pressure in this regard.
