ISLAMABAD: Acting Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice Tasadaq Hussain Jilani has said that conducting transparent Local Bodies Elections in a short time is a challenge and asked Chief Secretaries of the provinces and officers to follow the oath in spite of their political affiliation.
He said the ECP would issue code of conduct regarding LB polls up to October 31.
The meeting of Election Commission (ECP) was held on Tuesday under the Chairmanship of Justice Tasadaq Hussain Jilani for conducting LB-polls on the direction of Supreme Court of Pakistan in country.
Chief Secretaries of Punjab, Blochistan, Sindh and Provincial Election Commissioners, Secretary Interior, Secretary Finance, Chairman NADRA and Provincial Secretary Local Government attended the meeting. LB-polls related affairs were discussed in the meeting.
While addressing the meeting, Acting CEC Justice Tasadaq Hussain Jilani said that Chief Secretaries and government officers should follow the constitutional oath regardless of their political affiliation. He termed conducting of transparent LB-polls as a challenge.
He said the officers of district administration would execute duties of District Returning Officers. He said that Sindh filed application with District Session Judges for appointing DROs.
He described it a challenge to make LB-polls to be transparent whereas Secretary Election Commission said that 500 million ballot papers have to be dispatched to the polling stations.
Justice Tasadaq Jilani said that Sindh request regarding appointment of district officers as returning officers had been sent to Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. He said the Judicial Committee of Supreme Court would take decision on this application.
Secretary Election Commission Ishtiaq Ahemd Khan was of the view that the availability of electoral lists to Returning Officers is necessary to conduct LB-polls in Sindh up to November 1. He said that nomination documents are required up to November 1. Moreover, he said the EC would issue code of conduct up to October 31.
Secretary Finance Waqar Masud ensured EC to provide all resources to conduct LB-polls. He said the Prime Minister and Finance Minister are out of the country; however, EC would have to confront with no difficulty in this matter.
During the meeting, Chief Secretary Sindh took back the application filed with District Session Judges regarding appointing District Returning Officers. Now, the officers of district administration would execute duties of District Returning Officers.
