Gen. Sharif meets U.S. officials

raheelWASHINGTON: The United States on Monday described Pakistani army chief General Raheel Sharif’s meetings with American officials on security issues as positive and productive.

A State Department spokesman said Sharif held a series of high-level meetings with American officials at Central Command headquarters in Florida.

Director of Press Relations, Jeff Rathke told journalists at the daily briefing that the Pakistani has been having “productive and positive” meetings focusing on a range of issues including the border security.

“We have a broad relationship with Pakistan and chief of the army staff is a key figure,” he noted in a reference to wide-ranging civilian and security relationship with Pakistan.

Responding to a question, Rathke acknowledged the importance of Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts including the ongoing ‘Zarb-e-Azb’ operation in North Waziristan.

“Of course, we consider it extremely important, the fight against extremist groups,”  he said. –
