ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has said that efforts are being made to undermine the government’s efforts for peace. The Prime Minister’s comments came as he chaired a high level meeting focusing on matters of national security and the Taliban’s announcement of a month-long ceasefire as well as Monday’s attack in Islamabad. The important decisions regarding the protection of the national security were made during the meeting of the political and military leadership. Prime minister has directed interior minister to unveil the terrorists behind the Islamabad attack.
The meeting was attended by Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif, Director General Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lt. Gen Zaheeurl Islam, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif and Chief of General Staff Lt Gen. Ashfaq Nadeem Ahmed. The meeting also regretted over the Islamabad Kochehri terrorist incident. The overall security situation of the country was discussed in the meeting. The matters regarding the law and order situation in Karachi and protection of people were discussed in the meeting. The matter of dialogue with the Taliban was also discussed. The prime minister also took the meeting into confidence regarding the ceasefire announcement of government in FATA. Prime minister issued instructions to interior minister for utilizing all possible resources for the protection of national security and also for ensuring the protection of people.
The meeting also discussed the possibility of involvement of foreign hands in terrorist activities in Pakistan. The meeting also reiterated the resolve of overcoming terrorism in country. The approval regarding the important defence matters, issues at borders and for stopping the possible foreign intervention were given in the meeting.
Prime minister asked the interior minister to point out people behind the Islamabad attack after the ceasefire announcement of TTP. Interior minister also presented initial report of the Islamabad attack in meeting. Prime minister while showing concerns said that if Taliban have announced ceasefire then who is behind the Islamabad terrorist attack. He said that the security of the country is top priority of the government, adding that the government wants success of dialogue process but the security of the masses is also top priority.
Earlier the Prime Minister and COAS General Raheel Sharif held a one-on-one meeting.
They also exchanged views on matters related to national security and overall law and order situation in the country.
According to a private TV channel the army chief briefed the prime minister on the military’s stance on talks with the TTP. The goals achieved in North Waziristan were also discussed.
