John Kerry telephones PM; congratulates him & discuss bilateral relations

SLAMABAD, (SANA): The US Secretary of State John Kerry on Monday contacted Prime Minister MianMuhammad Nawaz Sharif telephone and assured him of US’s continued cooperation with the new government of Pakistan.

John Kerry congratulated the prime minister on taking the office meanwhile both discussed matters of regional significance and bilateral interests.

John Kerry praised Pakistan’s role in efforts to establish peace in the region, whereas Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif laid emphasis on strengthening the strategic dialogue between the two countries.

John Kerry reaffirmed the importance of Pakistan in US bilateral relations for enduring peace and stability in the region. He reassured that the US Administration remained steadfast in supporting the new democratic government in Pakistan.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif thanked US Secretary John Kerry for the felicitations and reiterated his government’s resolve to further consolidate and strengthen relations with the US on the basis of mutual trust and mutual respect.

The Prime Minister underscored the need to strengthen the Strategic Dialogue between both countries. He also emphasized upon the importance of regular high level exchanges between the two sides in order to build on mutual interests and shared goals.

The Prime Minister and Secretary Kerry also discussed the regional situation. Secretary Kerry provided an update on the recent developments and expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s positive role in advancing peace and stability in the region.

It is mentioning here that John Kerry will be visiting Pakistan during the current month which will make him the first high-ranking American official to visit the country since the May 11 general elections which saw Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz return to power.
John Kerry’s trip was confirmed by the foreign office, which announced on June 13 that US Secretary of State will arrive in Islamabad later this month for crucial talks with the country’s new political leadership on future bilateral cooperation.

The US Secretary of State himself recently stated that he was eager to meet the new leadership in Pakistan. John Kerry’s visit is seen to be important because it will set the tone for future cooperation between Islamabad and Washington. Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani also met Nawaz to firm up a strategy for crucial talks with John Kerry.
