Karachi bus tragedy: Oil tanker driver surrenders

oilKARACHI: Driver of the oil tanker involved in the tragic accident on National Highway Link Road, surrendered himself to police, saying the prick of his conscience forced him to take this step.

It should be mentioned here that at least 59 people were burnt alive after an ill-fated inter-city bus turned into a fireball following its collision with the oil tanker.

Giving his confession in chat with SAMAA late Wednesday night, driver, Muhammed Hanif, said the bus slipped out of his control after the tire burst, resulting in the smash-up that claimed lives of at least 59 innocent people.

Middle-aged Hanif asserted he handed himself into police custody as he is ashamed of what he did, saying the burst tire caused the oil tanker to careen off towards the bus, leading to the tragic accident.

It is pertinent to note here that police failed to arrest the driver for four last days.

The driver said he fled the scene as the bus blaze immensely frightened him off, adding, “But, I could not sleep for three days. My children were also appalled as to what had happened.”

Responding to a query, Hanif was of the view that he made frantic effort to open the bus door but failed in doing so as it was a hydraulic door.
