Karachi violence claims 14 lives

lehrKARACHI: At least 14 persons have been killed in the target killing incidents in Karachi on Tuesday, bringing the toll during past 24 hours to 24 including two women.

Police and rescue officials said a firing incident took place in Korangi industrial area where armed men on motorbike shot dead two people and injured two others in the attack.

In another similar incident, police said, two people were shot dead and three injured in a drive-by attack at Karachi Defence area early morning.

A woman and her daughter were found dead in Karachi’s New Sabzi Mandi area. Four dead bodies were recovered in Baldia, Orangi and Korangi areas.

The recent wave of violence appears to have intensified with the month of Muharram beginning from today (Wednesday).

Two persons were killed in a gunfiring incident at a hotel near Chamra Chowrangi in Karachi’s Korangi Industrial Area.

A trussed up body was found in Ali Mohammad neighbourhood of Karachi’s Lyari area. The victim was shot to death after being kidnapped.

Another two persons, including a former local counselor belonging to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, Tariq Shah and Yar Muhammad were killed when unknown gunmen opened fire on them near Defence Mor (the intersection between Korangi Road and Sunset Boulevard). The dead bodies of seven persons were shifted in Jinnah Hospital. A dead body packed in gunny bag was recovered near the Nasir Jump area. Two persons were killed in the result of the firing of unknown persons in Layari and Ittehad Town areas.

A moazin, Mufti Tariq Shah, was shot dead by unknown assailants in Defence Housing Authority Phase I. The victim was shot in the head and died before rescue or security teams could reach the site. Police personnel said that the incident appeared to a targeted attack.

Throat-slit bodies of a couple were found inside a water tank of a house located near Qatar Mor area of Orangi Town area.

One person was killed and another wounded in a gunfiring incident in Orangi Town No 2 area of Karachi.

The spike in violence and targeted attacks comes a day after Chief of Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani visited the port city and lauded the efforts of Karachi police and Rangers for restoring peace in the city.

Targeted operations led by Rangers’ forces with the support of police are ongoing in the city under a directive issued by the federal government against criminals already identified by federal, military and civilian agencies.

Meanwhile the targeted operations of the rangers and police are continued in the city, during which several criminals were arrested. According to details rangers and police conducted raids in Lyari, Liaquatabad, Chenisar Goth, Malir, North Nazimabad, Sikandar Goth and Mominabad and arrested 22 suspects.

In a separate development, police arrested three target killers after an encounter in Maripur area. Those who were arrested were identified as Anjum alias Sohail, Sharf-ud-Din alias Sharfu and Ali alias Shabu.
According to police, the arrested target killers were involved in killing of 30 people.

Police also arrested two extortionists during raids in Orangi Town and Maripur.

On the other hand, Rangers and police arrested four target killers during a joint operation in Sohrab Goth. According to law enforcement agencies, the arrested target killers belonged to a political party.
