Kohat blast claims 13 lives, injures more than 15

kuhatKOHAT: At least 13 persons were killed and over 15 others were injured in the result of the remote controlled bomb blast near a Suzuki pick up at Peshawar Chowk on Kohat Hangu Road on Sunday. The passenger Suzuki pick up was ready to move forward towards Hangu when it was targeted with the remote control bomb blast.

The wounded were shifted to Liaquat Memoria Hospital and District Headquarters Hospital for medical treatment by rescue teams. Meanwhile five critically inured persons were shifted in Leady Reading Hospital Peshawar.

According to police, the blast occurred outside girls’ college near police lines on Peshawar Chowk.

According to Bomb Disposal Squad, five to six kilograms of explosives was planted in a cooking oil container and placed near the bus stop in the city centre before being detonated remotely.

Law enforcement agencies cordoned off the area and started collecting evidences.

According to Inspector General Police KPK Nasir Khan Durrani‚ it was an IED blast planted in fruit crate on the roadside. He said that five kilograms of explosives were used in the blast.

Nasir Khan Durrani, said that the blast took place near a passenger vehicle at Peshawar chowk on Hangu road.

Rejecting the notion that the blast was carried out by a suicide bomber, he said that it appeared to have been carried out using a planted device. He said all the efforts are being done for curbing the terrorist incidents, adding that the search and strike operations are continued. He said that the KPK police is used to defuse two to three IEDs daily.

He said the blast took place near a pickup van at Peshawar Chowk on Kohat-Hangu Road. All the passengers in the vehicle lost their lives while several others including a woman sustained injuries.

He said that a pick-up carrying passengers was targeted near the bus stop. He said security has been put on high alert in Peshawar and other parts due to terrorist threats. He said that the investigations are underway to know the causes of bomb blast.

District police chief Salim Khan Marwat talking to media said “After getting the latest reports from the hospitals where the dead bodies and injured were taken, we can now confirm that 10 people have been killed and 14 others are injured.”

Security and rescue teams rushed to the site of explosion which was heard across a long distance.

Provincial Health Minister Shouakat Yousufzai said that nine people lost their lives in the explosion while 15 more sustained injuries.

Kohat-Hangu Road was blocked for traffic following the incident, while the bodies and injured persons were rushed to nearby hospital.

President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif have strongly condemned the act of terrorism in Kohat.
They have expressed their grief and sorrow over the deaths of innocent people in the blast. President and prime minister have ordered the local administration to provide best medical facilities to injured persons.

Meanwhile Chief Minister KPK Parvez Khan Khattak, Governor KPK Engineer Shoukatullah Kahn, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, former president Asif Ali Zardari, Opposition Leader in National Assembly Syed khurshid Shah, PTI Chairman Imran Khan, Chief Minister Punjab Mian Shahbaz Shairf, Amir Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) Maulana Fazalur Rehman, Amir Jamaat-e-Islami Syed Munawar Hassan, ANP Chief Asfandyar Wali Khan, MQM Chief Altaf Hussain, Jamaatud Dawa Amir Professor Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, JI Secretary General Liaquat Baloch and other leaders have also condemned Kohat blast and offered sympathies with the families of the killed persons.

Meanwhile Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar has summoned report of the bomb blast from the IG KPK Nasir Khan Durrani.
