It was prayed in the plea that the prominent politicians including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Chief Minister Punjab Mian Shahbaz Sharif, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, ex-president Asif Ali Zardari, PTI Chairman Imran Khan, PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and others have assets abroad while the country is reeling under untold burden of debt.
The court was told that Nawaz Sharif, Kulsoom Nawaz, Hussain Nawaz, Shah Mehmood Qurreshi did not receive court notices while ex-prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has received it.
The court ordered that notices against the respondents would be published in national newspapers if they fail to appear before the court.
The petition was filed in 1996 by a lawyer Javed Iqbal Jafri against 26 politicians but later more names were added to it. The petition stated that the respondent politicians had transferred at least $300 billion to foreign countries through money laundering, causing a huge loss to the national exchequer.
The petitioner pleaded that the court might order the politicians to bring back their assets for the national interest.
The court further ordered that the politicians who could not be informed, should be notified through advertisements. Justice Khalid Mehmood said that if the $ 200 billion are brought back in country the whole foreign debts of country could be repaid. Justice Khalid Mehmood said that the court will hold in the roots of the case as it was important case. The court has summoned all 20 politicians including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Asif Zardari and others in personal capacity on 15th June. The hearing of the case was subsequently adjourned to June 15.
