NA unanimously asks for review of LB polls’ schedule in provinces

inISLAMABAD: The National Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution seeking review of the schedule for the local bodies’ elections in provinces announced by Election Commission of Pakistan.

Resolution says that the recently announced schedule by the Election Commission of the Local Bodies Elections is practically difficult to deliver free and fair elections.

PTI leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi tabled the resolution in the assembly. The resolution was singed by Khurshid Shah, Sheikh Aftab Ahmed, Farooq Sattar, Mehmod Achakzai, Tariq Bashir Cheema and Birjees Tahir.

The resolution says that proper time should be given to the Election Commission for preparations of LB polls, adding that the holding of LB polls on the given dates of Supreme Court is not possible.

The resolution says if the whole process was completed in haste then the transparency of the LB polls would be affected. The resolution duly signed by different political leaders has been forwarded to the Election Commission.

The resolution moved by Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that conducting local bodies elections in haste will cast doubts on the credibility and transparency of the election results.

The resolution said the Election Commission must ensure proper procedures to ensure free and transparent local government elections. The resolution says that the Election Commission would not be able to make arrangements for the LB polls according to the current schedule of LB polls in Sindh, Balochistan and Punjab.

It said printing of ballot papers as defined by the law can only be carried out by the Printing Press of Pakistan which has shown its inability to print the ballot papers according to the schedule given by the Election Commission.

It said the printing of ballot papers by any private printing press will not be acceptable as it will make the entire election process questionable. The sovereign political will of this House should prevail in a democratic process.

The resolution duly signed by different political leaders has been forwarded to the Election Commission.
