ISLAMABAD: Chief of the Army Staff General Raheel Sharif called on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at the PM House in Islamabad and discussed the matters of national security. Prime minister has given the authority of to army chief for carrying out military action in North Waziristan Agency. Army chief briefed the prime minister about the security situation of North Waziristan.
According to a private TV channel prime minister took army chief into confidence on the national security policy and said that this policy would help crushing out militancy from the country. Prime minister said the national security policy has been prepared after long consultations and hard work, adding that this is comprehensive policy. Army chief briefed the prime minister about the recent actions carried out in North Wazristan. Army chief also informed the prime minister about the details of the killing of important commanders in NWA.
Army chief also sought permission of future actions against the terrorists. Prime minister while giving complete authority to army for taking actions against the terrorists said no uprising would be tolerated against the state, adding that if the terrorist attacks would be carried out on armed forces and official installations these would not be tolerated. Prime minister said that the attacks of the terrorists are unacceptable, adding that the security forces are fully empowered to destroy the terrorist hideouts.
The COAS and the PM discussed the present security situation and discussed the government’s strategy against the Taliban. The two also discussed the national security policy that was presented before the national assembly earlier in the day.
They exchanged views on matters related to national security and overall law and order situation in the country.
During the meeting, the COAS gave a briefing to the PM about actions against militants.
He told the premier that actions against militants were bringing positive results.
Following the one on one meeting between the Prime Minister and the Army Chief, Defence Minister Khwaja Asif, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar, DG ISI Lt. General Zaheer-ul-Islam and the DGMO Lt. General Amir Riaz also joined the discussion. Prior to this military leadership briefed the political leadership regarding the situation of North Waziristan and national security. According to sources the military officials informed the political leadership that some Taliban groups are enjoying the support of Afghan intelligence and Indian intelligence agency RAW.
During such briefings it has been shared, that in case a full blown operation is launched against the militants, the army can clear the area within 4 to 6 weeks, however after the operation is complete the army will have to remain in Waziristan – as it had post-operation in Swat.
