Pakistan catches 61 ‘stray’ Indian fishermen

poliKARACHI: Pakistan’s Maritime Security Agency (MSA) Thursday night arrested at least 61 Indian fishermen after they strayed into South Asian country’s territorial waters.

The Maritime Security Agency (MSA) said the fishermen were arrested in the small hours while their 11 boats were also seized.

“We arrested the fisherman from the neighbouring country late Thursday night after they violated our territorial limits, fishing illegally into Pakistani waters,” sources quoted an MSA spokesman as saying.

Fishermen from both countries are frequently held for straying across the disputed and poorly defined maritime boundary in the Arabian Sea.

The maritime security official further said the fishermen were handed to the Docks police, who are set to prepare cases against them that could result in their being sent to jail.-
