PPP victim of national, international conspiracies: Zardari

LAHORE, (SANA): President Asif Ali Zardari has claimed that conspiracies being hatched by national and international institutions were the reason for the election defeat of the Pakistan Peoples Party.

The president met PPP ticket holders from Punjab on Monday and said the party would play the role of opposition with fill vigor. Yousuf Raza Gilani, Manzoor Watoo, former Punjab governor Sardar Latif Khosa, Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar and other important leaders were among those who called on the president at the Bilawal House in Lahore. “PPP could have won 40-45 seats in Punjab,” President Zardari said.

According to Zardari he could not take part in election campaigning due to restrictions placed on the office of president. “I will take active part in politics after my presidential tenure expires.”

The president added that all three of children will be active in politics.

“I will soon be with the workers and lead PPP from the front,” he said adding his children will also be in the field. However, he said PPP would examine the causes of the poor performance in the elections.

He said a committee headed by Aitezaz Ahsan would look into the poor performance of the party in the elections. Zardari said some PPP enthusiasts did not like his policy of reconciliation.

He said he would congratulate Nawaz Sharif if the PPP workers allowed him. The president said that the conspiracies were hatched by international and local institutions.

Zardari said that he would compensate whatever was done by the party. Sources added that the president was inquiring the ticket-bearers over the party’s dismal performance in the May 11 elections.

The meeting was also expected to reach a decision on the PPP’s strategy and the future direction of the party.
