ISLAMABAD: Leader of House in Senate Raja Muhammad Zafarul Haq while terming the statement of PTI Chairman Imran Khan that there are 40 percent chances of success of military action in North Waziristan Agency as totally baseless has showed confidence that Pakistan Army is fully capable and equipped to confront any internal and external aggression.
The Senate resumed its session in Islamabad on Friday with Chairman Syed Nayyer Hussain Bukhari in the chair.
Responding to points of orders in the on Friday‚ he said that the entire nation also stands by the armed forces. He pointed out that the security forces have rendered great sacrifices in the war against terrorism.
Raja Zafarul Haq said the war against terror also claimed the lives of our top army officers including Generals and Lt. General because they were leading from the front.
Rejecting as baseless the remarks made by PTI Chairman Imran Khan in an interview with a private channel‚ Raja Zafarul Haq clarified that a meeting of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif‚ the then Army Chief‚ Interior Minister and the PTI Chairman was held before the start of the All Parties Conference.
He said the then Army Chief informed the meeting that terrorist activities will see a decline of 40 percent immediately if the government opts for the military operation. However‚ it was decided with consensus that the dialogue process will be pursued to overcome the menace of terrorism.
He said the remarks made by Imran Khan about this meeting are totally out of context and has nothing to do with the reality.
Meanwhile PPP leader Mian Raza Rabbani demanded of the KPK government to resign over increasing terrorism in KPK. Meanwhile Senate chairman warning Raza Rabbani said he will not run the house on the aspirations of anybody, adding that he will adjourn the session over this kind of attitude.
Meanwhile the Senate was informed on Friday that there is no moratorium on death penalty in the country.
Minister of State for Interior Balighur Rehman told the House during question hour that former President Asif Ali Zardari did not implement the death penalties. Execution of death sentences was delayed but the present government is in the process of consultation to take a decision about the matter.
He informed the House that currently five hundred and forty-seven people are on death row for their involvement in murdered cases and terrorist activities. He said that mercy petitions of 70 cases have already been rejected.
To another question, the Minister of State for Interior said NADRA is working on homeland security projects both at the national and international level. It has earned an amount of 17.50 million dollars from the international projects. Sri Lanka has awarded a project to NADRA for Identity Document Digitization.
Minister for Information and Broadcasting Pervaiz Rashid told the House that a 100 KW medium wave transmitter has been installed at Radio Pakistan Hyderabad and it will be commissioned in the second week of next month.
To a supplementary question, the Information Minister said the government has recently taken a step to provide financial assistance to the artists facing financial hardships. The Prime Minister has allocated money for this programme. He said special steps are being taken to promote the artists particularly belonging to neglected areas including FATA. He said there is no disparity in remuneration of artists on the basis of language, region or province.
Minister for Law, Justice and Human Rights Pervaiz Rashid laid before the House The Gas Theft Control and Recovery Ordinance, 2014. The chair referred the ordinance to the concerned standing committee.
Responding to a call attention notice moved by Farhatullah Babar and others, Minister for Finance Ishaq Dar said that State Bank of Pakistan enjoys full autonomy in its affairs. He said it was our previous government which further strengthened the role of the State Bank.
The Minister clarified that the former State Bank Governor Yasin Anwar left the office on his free will and the new Governor will be appointed in a transparent manner within 90 days. The House will now meet on Monday at 3:00 pm.
