KARACHI: Ahead of April 23 by-election in NA-246 constituency, the traditional election flurry is entering its last leg as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) will hold its rally today (Sunday) at Sharah-e-Pakistan.
PTI chief Imran Khan will address the rally.
Reports said the arrangements have been finalized for the rally where party leaders are expecting thousands of their supporters.
A giant stage has been set up at Sharah-e-Pakistan near Aisha Manzil, with thousands of chairs placed at the rally venue.
The PTI leaders including Asad Umar, Imran Ismail and Ali Zaidi overnight visited the venue along with workers to review preparations. The central leaders discussed and passed necessary directives for arrangements of the rally and its stage.
On this occasion, a motorbike rally of Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) supporters drove nearby at Ayesha Manzil. With workers from the two sides settled facing each others, a clash-like situation cropped up with frenzied slogans from enthusiasts of the two sides.
Police personnel intercepted and averted a near-flashpoint situation.
The law-enforcement agencies readied a security plan for today’s rally. According to the police sources, at least 2,753 policemen including eight SPs, 16 DSPs, 40 SHOs, eight additional SHOs and 360 rapid response force personnel would be deployed at the venue.
Six teams of bomb disposal squad will scan the rally venue.
Addressing a press conference flanked by Imran Ismail yesterday, PTI Chairman Imran Khan asserted that NA-246 by-election is highly significant for him as his party seeks an end to the politics of fear in the city in order to give its people a ray of hope. –
