ISLAMABAD: Given the report of local commission the polling staff in NA-122 Lahore constituency was guilty of professional mismanagement as they did not fulfill as myriad of legal requirements on May 11, 2013, the election day, officials at Election Commission of Pakistan said Thursday.
“The absence of stamps and signatures on the counterfoils of the ballot papers is tantamount to professional negligence. Should such polling mismanagement alter the outcome of vote then it is a violation to the tune of fraud,” an official told Samaa Thursday.
The said electoral violations had made the matters gravely serious, the official informed Samaa, adding the violators deserved due punishment; however laws for penalizing polling staff for botching the job advertently or inadvertently were unfortunately weak.
The ECP also called on the parliament to legislate for stronger laws.
“It should be made clear the local commission has audited the vote in NA-122. No recounting whatsoever was done in this regard,” the ECP said.
The electoral authority was of the view that only an election tribunal would decide whether it was rigging or mismanagement.
“In case the rigging is proved the election could be declared null and void,” it added.
