ISLAMABAD, (SANA): Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and Murtaza Javed Abbassi of PML-N have been elected Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly here on Monday by securing 258 votes each. Opponents of Ayaz Sadiq Shehryar Afridi of PTI secured 31and Iqbal Qadri of MQM 23 votes in the election. Overall 313 votes were polled in the election of speaker out of which one was invalid. PML-N President Mian Nawaz Sharif, Chauhdry Nisar Ali Khan, Mehmood Khan Achakzai, Makhdoom Javed Hashmi, Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Syed Khurshid Shah, Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali and other members were present in the house during the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker National Assembly.
Pakistan Muslim League-N candidate Sardar Ayaz Sadiq‚ PPP’s Yousuf Talpur‚ PTI’s Sheryar Afridi and MQM’s Iqbal Qadri were candidates for the office of the Speaker.
The PPP, on the request of PML-N, has decided to withdraw its candidates for the office.
Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) had also announced to support PML-N candidate for the two offices.
Later, outgoing Speaker Dr. Fehmida Mirza administered oath from the new Speaker. Meanwhile Ayaz Sadiq administered the oath of newly elected deputy speaker Murtaza Javed Abbassi.
Meanwhile, newly elected Speaker of the National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said that he will make all out efforts to run the House with complete transparency and impartiality. .
In his remarks after taking oath of the office, he said that he will treat all members equally and he appealed the members to cooperate with him to run the House smoothly.
Ayaz Sadiq said each member will have to play his role for the progress and stability of the country and upholding of supremacy of constitution. He said we all will have to work for resolving the problems of the people.
In her remarks out going speaker Dr. Fehmida Mirza expressed the confidence that new speaker and the Assembly will continue to work for strengthening of democracy and resolve the problems being faced by the people and the country.
She said it is our obligation to protect the constitution. She said the previous House played vital role in bringing balance among the state institutions.
Dr. Fehmida paid rich tributes to the members of the former house especially women members for their valuable contribution in the promotion and strengthening of democratic norms and resolving major issues especially restoring the constitution in its original shape.
Meanwhile Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq while announced the procedure of the prime minister election has summoned the nomination papers from the candidates till today (Tuesday).
The scrutiny of the papers would be done at 4:00 pm; meanwhile the election of the prime minister would be held tomorrow (Wednesday). The polling for the election of the prime minister would be done through division.
