SC defers hearing of flour prices case for a week

Supreme-Court-of-Pakistan The Supreme Court of Pakistan has adjourned the hearing of case against increase in flour prices for one week.

Three-member bench of Apex Court comprising Justice Nasirul Mulk, Justice Jawwad S Khawaja and Justice Umar Ata Bandyal heard the sou-moto Notice case taken on letter of Secretary General Jamat-e-Islami Liaqat Baloch.

Advocate Tauseef Asif and Saifullah Gondal appeared on behalf of JI leader while Secretary Food Security Seerat Asghar presented the federation.

Secretary Food Security presented a consolidated report and stated that government has given sufficient subsidy the the poor segments of the society as the amount of Benazir Income Support Program has been increased to 118 million from 80 million rupees.

He further said that the provision of the food to poor is the duty of provinces however he had contacted the provincial authorities and all provinces are of the view that they can not take steps during this year because there is no system to provide the special subsidy to the targeted poor segments of the society. One year is required to take steps in this regard, he added.

During the course of hearing Justice Jawwad S Khawaja remarked that people in far flung areas including Tharparkar, Awaran are dying due to hunger but government has not made any progress during last one year after coming case before the court.

One day fast (ROZA) can be afford but the provincial governments want that poor should remain on fast for one year, adding that one year fast is impossible.

The court inquired the provincial law officers about the prices of flour in the provinces but they could not give satisfactory response to the court quarries.

The court directed the office to provide the copies of the report to all parties in case and after going through the reports court would proceed further.
