SC suspends ASWJ chief’s victory notification
The Supreme Court has suspended a notification declaring Ahle-Sunnat Wal Jamaat leader Maulana Ahmed Ludhianvi winner from National Assembly seat in Punjab’s NA 89, Jang. An Election Tribunal had declared the ASWJ chief victorious earlier this month while announcing a verdict on his petition. The ASWJ chief, who was runner up from NA 89 in last year’s general elections, had challenged the victory of PML-N’s Akram Sheikh on the grounds that he is a ‘defaulter’. On Ludhianvi’s petition, the tribunal had voided Sheikh’s election, declaring him ineligible for holding any public office. However, Akram Sheikh moved the Supreme Court against the tribunal’s ruling by filing a petition. Today, a three-member bench headed by Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali took up the plea and suspended Ludhianvi’s victory notification. The Supreme Court issued its stay orders over the Election Tribunal’s ruling and issued notices to both the parties. The court has now referred the case to the tribunal.
