Strong economy, democracy essential for credible defense: Sharif
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said on Saturday credible defense of the country is dependent upon strong economy and democratic institutions. Addressing the 129th PMA Long Course at Pakistan Military Academy at Kakul, Sharif said that all the institutions have to work together to achieve the common goal of nation’s progress. “Let me remind you (cadets) that without strong economy, democratic institutions and rule of law, credible defense of the country isn’t possible,” Sharif said. The prime minister congratulated young cadets and said that their commissioning in the Pakistan Army is a matter of great pride. He called upon them to uphold the prestige of the Pakistan Army through integrity of character and perseverance. “Nation reposes great trust in you, and you have to prove this trust,” he said, adding the profession of arms demands allegiance and sacrifice. Sharif also called upon young cadets to remain abreast with latest technology as the nature of warfare has completely changed in the modern world. “But what you lack in possession, you must make it up with your passion,” he told cadets. Earlier, the prime minister reviewed the smartly turned out parade and gave away honorary sword, sticks and gold medals to cadets for showing exemplary performance. Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif along with senior officers and government ministers were also present on the occasion. A large number of parents of the cadets also attended the ceremony.
